B&O 731 - LaPaz Junction, Indiana
B&O 4-8-2 731 is crossing Maple Road at LaPaz Jct. (East LaPaz on some maps) on November 16, 1957. The slide color has shifted beyond what I can correct, but still an interesting picture. In the foreground is the interchange track from the B&O to the Pennsy South Bend Branch, The B&O is still double track at this time, behind the engine is a store, rooming house or whatever (a little of the foundation is still there), Maple Road where the Studebaker is waiting is gravel and still is today. CSS 803 - Michigan City, Indiana
Not many motorists will argue about who has the right of way here. The South Shore’s “Little Joe” #803 is running westbound caboose light on 11th Street in Michigan City on a dark January day in 1974. Photo is from the Tom Gascoigne collection.
DL&W 1043 - Decatur, Indiana
Delaware, Lackawanna & Western RS3 #1043 is shown working a local freight at Decatur, Indiana in this undated photo. This photo is undoubtedly from the early 1960s. The engine would keep its same number on the Erie Lackawanna. Photo is from the Tom Gascoigne collection.
EL 7114 - Hammond, Indiana
It is July 1974 and the Erie Lackawanna is still running cab units. The photo was taken in Hammond, Indiana, but I am just not sure where. Anyways, an A-B-A set of cab units look nice anywhere. Photo is from the Tom Gascoigne collection.
Erie 3044 - North Judson, Indiana
A westbound Erie freight pulled by N1 class Mikado #3044 has just crossed the C&O diamond and is about to cross the Pennsy diamonds. On the left are C&O maintenance buildings and on the right is the Erie depot. The tower was wedged in between the Pennsy and Railroad Street. This area now has a very dense growth of brush. Monon Sand Tower - Monon, Indiana
A seldom photographed item that is a part of railroading was the sand tower. All types of locomotives used sand for added traction. Monon RS2m 57 is shown at Monon, Indiana on April 25, 1971 sitting next to the sand tower. The Monon normally kept an engine here for locale service. Photo is by Bob Albert.
N&W 1218 - Osborn, Indiana

N&W OCS - Burr Oak, Indiana
How many remember the N&W’s experiment with white stripes not long before the merger with the Southern? Only three units were painted in this scheme, 4104, 4107 and 4129. On May 31, 1983 GP38ACs 4129 and 4104 lead a westbound office car special through Burr Oak, Indiana. Photo is by Bob Albert.
NKP 965 - Argos, Indiana
Nickel Plate engine 965 began life as Nickel Plate 524 in 1917 and was renumbered in 1955 to make room for GP9s on the roster. It is shown here at Argos, Indiana on a local freight. Most of its life was spent working on the Chicago Division between Ft. Wayne and Chicago. Retired in 1957 and sold to Kaplan Scrap yard on January 31, 1962. Later Dick Jensen bought the engine, but it was eventually scrapped. Photo is from Bob Albert collection.
NKP Train no. 8 - Spriggsboro, Indiana
Nickel Plate train #8 is eastbound, crossing the Grand Trunk on March 22, 1958. Even on this date the Nickel Plate trains remained a respectable size, but that would change in the next decade. Photo is from the NKPHTS collection.
PC Passenger Train - Winamac, Indiana
A Logansport bound Penn Central passenger train stops at Winamac, Indiana on April 25, 1971. Railfans were on hand to photograph Grand Trunk Western steam engine 5629 was scheduled to run on the Panhandle, which was cancelled. The depot and track are now gone and a walking trail is in its place. Photo is by Bob Albert.
PRR Depot - Valparaiso, Indiana
The Pennsy depot at Valparaiso, Indiana was built in 1888. Over the years I’m sure a lot passengers, baggage and mail passed through the doors. Passenger service ended on May 3, 1991 when Amtrak ran the last commuter train. An arsonist took care of the building in 1993. One of the agents at this station was Robert Maudlin and his daughter, Beverly Maudlin, submitted this photo.
PRR Stockyard - Plymouth, Indiana
Back in September 1961 there were two Pennsylvania stock cars parked at the Plymouth, Indiana stockyard. These stock cars appear to rebuilt box cars and I have not noticed many picture of them. I was surprised to see them, as I didn’t think the stockyard shipped by rail. Photo is by the Bob Albert.
South Shore Fan Trip in 1960
On October 9, 1960 the South Shore ran the fan trip shown here at Michigan City. That should be the Roeske Street overpass in the background. I don’t know the reason for box cab motors #903 and #900 being on the train unless they were being retired and were the reason for the trip. Photo is from the Tom Gascoigne collection.
